A song came to me while I was painting this and stayed for the whole of it. Anduru Kutiya Thula, sung by T. M. Jayaratne to Khemadasa's music, the words carried over from Tagore. The line I kept hearing was balan kadathura hara dase. Look, with the veil taken from your eyes. Kadathura is a veil or a blindfold, and the song is about refusing to look for the sacred in a dark room with the doors bolted, when it is out on the road among people breaking stones. I did not illustrate the song. I painted with that line running, and this is where it went.
