We went to Vessagiriya, in Anuradhapura, and I enjoyed that trip very much. It is a place of enormous boulders leaning on one another in a way that does not look possible, made into retreats for monks to meditate in. The carving is the part I keep returning to. A katarama, the drip ledge, is cut into the rock brow above the cave mouth so that rainwater running down the outer face is thrown clear of the opening, the way a gutter works on a house roof. Between two of those boulders I watched the sun go down. That is what this is.
