We went to Polonnaruwa, my husband and our two sons and I. We went along a narrow path with trees pressing in on both sides, and then it opened, all at once, onto the shore of a river. The sun was going down in front of us and there were mountains on one side. By the time I came to the canvas the place had already arranged itself in my mind, and that arrangement is what I followed.
