Unawatuna Morning
Acrylic and modeling paste on canvas, 2026
48 × 72 in
Unawatuna, early in the morning, is where this began. It could be read as a desert, or a shore, or the bed of a sea. The water has gone under a layer you cannot see through and one whole side of it is lost. The sand is the nearest thing to you. Beyond it the sea and the sky stop being two separate things. I liked not having to decide which of the three places it was, so I left all three in and let the horizon go.
