In the time of the Sri Lankan kings there were council grounds where a king sat among his ministers and addressed the people who came, and there were the angam madu, the halls where fighters trained. I read the chithra katha Muthu Kumari when I was little, and Vijayaba Kollaya, and I have liked the kingdom eras ever since. Nobody told me what such a place looked like, so I decided. I put the view high above it, looking down. That seems to be where I stand whenever the history is imagined, high up and outside it, watching the thing go on below.
